Johann von Dalberg

Johann ( born 14 August 1455 in Oppenheim, † July 27, 1503 in Heidelberg) of Dalberg, Bishop of Worms from 1480 to 1482 Chancellor of the University of Heidelberg.

Life

He was born as the son of the Palatine Court Marshal Wolf von Dalberg ( 1426-1476 ). He studied philosophy at Erfurt and in Pavia Jura. In 1480 he became provost in Worms and Chancellor of the University of Heidelberg, which he brought to full flower.

Elector Philipp of the Palatinate (reigned 1476-1508 ) appointed him to the New Year 1482 as Chancellor of the Electoral Palatinate and advocated that he was elected on August 2, 1482 to the Bishop of Worms. Dalberg promoted the humanist aspirations and made Heidelberg and Worms to the then centers of humanism. In 1484, he invited his friend, the Pavia ago Rudolf Agricola to Heidelberg, where this important representatives of the Nordic early humanism gave speeches and lectures in free communication with the university, and traveled with him to Rome in 1485. He stood with the renowned scholars of his time in a lively exchange of ideas. 1496 was Dalberg by the pastor Jacob Stoll of Alsheim hold a diocesan visitation, which is written in the Worms Synod.

Monument

King Ludwig I of Bavaria was one of Johann von Dalberg to the great figures of German history and honored him in its " Hall of Fame " Walhalla near Regensburg with a marble bust of Arnold Hermann Lossow.
