Johannes Cuspinian

John Cuspinian, Latinized to Johannes spit Heimer, (* 1473 in Schweinfurt, † 19 April, 1529 in Vienna, St. Stephen ) was a humanist, poet and diplomat in Habsburg service.

Life and work

In Vienna, which was his main place of activity, studied and taught Cuspinian the classical languages ​​, literature, philosophy, and finally medicine. In the humanist circles of his time such as the Sodalitas litteraria Danubiana he was himself a poet, and especially as the editor of ancient texts.

In 1510 he entered the diplomatic service of Emperor Maximilian I and represented the Habsburg Empire around ten years at the Hungarian court. He was appointed to the Imperial Council and was later the offices of the Superintendent of Vienna University and the lawyer of the city of Vienna. In both positions, he represented the imperial interests against the respective institutions.
