Johannes Elias Teijsmann

Johannes Elias Teijsmann or Teysmann ( born June 1, 1808June 22, 1882 in Buitenzorg ) was a Dutch botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Teijsm. ".

Teijsmann came in 1830 in Java, and was hired by the Dutch Governor-General van den Bosch as a gardener. From 1831 to 1860 he was curator of the Botanical Gardens Buitenzorg ( Bogor ).

He participated in several botanical excursions to the Sunda Islands, Malaysia, Thailand, the former Siam and to New Guinea. He led the palm oil from West Africa to Indonesia one, is still one of the main agricultural products of the islands. Teijsmann discovered and described many species of orchids and tropical plants, often in collaboration with the Dutch botanist Simon Binnendijk, his research assistant. Both donned together two extensive plant catalogs.

Honors

  • The twice contracted genus name Teysmannia ( palms and Hundsgiftgewächse ) and the name of the palm genus Johannesteijsmannia
