Johannes Frisius

John Frisius (* 1505 in Greifensee, † January 28, 1565 Zurich ), Johannes Fries, was a Swiss Reformed theologian and educator.

Life

Supported and funded by the reformer Ulrich Zwingli studied Frisius 1527-1531 at the College of the cathedral to Zurich. In 1535 he was able to complete his studies in Artes successful. After reaching the Bachelor of Arts he was entrusted in 1536 with a teaching position at the Latin School of Basel.

End of 1536 moved Frisius as a school master at the Benedictine convent of Zurich. He remained there until 1547 and then moved to 1563 as a schoolmaster on the Grand Cathedral. Already in 1557 appointed him to the Council of the City of Zurich to the choir master.

Work

Frisius served as editor of several authors, for which he also wrote important commentaries. He was heavily involved ( as a translator ) in the development of the Zurich Bible. Among other dictionaries and glossaries Frisius published in 1556 his Dictionnaire Anglais-Français ( today known as "The Great Fries "); bilingual created in his image Robert Estienne.
