Johannes Ghiselin

Johannes Ghiselin aka Verbonnet (also Verbonetto, Barboneto ) (* 1455 in Picardy, † 1507-1511, probably in Flanders ) was a Franco- Flemish composer and singer.

Life

Ghiselin was probably born about 1455 in Picardy. Maybe his last name plays Verbonnet on the yet unidentified birthplace.

About his education and early years nothing is known. Perhaps he was the Burgundian court chapel in any relationship. This is indicated by the chanson Je l' ay empris, quoting the motto of Charles the Bold († 1477 ). This chanson Ghiselin has poor used in the Missa De les as a Christian.

Documentary Ghiselin becomes tangible for the first time in Ferrara. Here he served in the court orchestra of the music-loving Duke Ercole I d' Este († 1505). In a report drawn up in Reggio on July 10, 1491 letter Ghiselin, which certainly belonged to the familia of the Duke a few years turned, to the Duke with a request for a benefice in Rubiera for his young son Hercules:

" [ ... ] Since I married because, for [ a, a benefice such ] would not be entitled to rely, I request Your Excellency to provide you with this my little son Hercules, that he follow the path of virtue thanks to Your Highness can. "

It is unknown whether Ghiselin has had success with this petition. In the same year Isabella d' Este sent him with the mission to France, there to win two young singers for the court orchestra. Soon after his return left Ghiselin Ferrara.

Since October 1492 Ghiselin singer in Florence. He sang at the Baptistery of San Giovanni, at the Cathedral and at Sta. Annunziata. When the chapel was disbanded in March 1493, Ghiselin lost his position. It was because he could not repay debts to a certain di Bonaventura Mostro from Ferrara, imprisoned and set free only thanks Ercoles appeal in April 1493.

In the following years he must have become a member of the French court chapel. This is suggested that Ghiselin has set to music an 1493 on the occasion of the forced return of Margaret of Austria from Paris to Brussels arisen poem by Octovien de Saint- Gelais, continue Crétins Deploration to the death of Johannes Ockeghem († 1497 ), in which Ghiselin in a row with Alexander Agricola and Johannes Prioris, composers of the French court chapel, called, and finally the recently discovered fact that Ghiselin and Alexander Agricola, who arrived proven from France, in February and March, 1494 in Naples at the court of Alfonso II together, the reigned since the beginning of the year, have stopped.

In a letter dated July 21, 1501 called Ferrara's ambassador at the French court, de Cavalieri, Ghiselin a singer of the French king. Nevertheless Ghiselin talked to death Ercoles good relationship to Ferrara and worked as a musical agent of the Duke in France. He handed the ambassador Ferraneser 1501, for example, different compositions, including one by Josquin Desprez, who were sent by the Ambassador with a letter of 25 September 1501 Ferrara. As Josquin Desprez received the offer of the Duke to become maestro di cappella of the court orchestra in Ferrara, Ghiselin was commissioned to accompany Josquin Desprez of France to Ferrara. On April 12, 1503 reported Mantua's ambassador at the French court that Josquin and Ghiselin, come from Paris in a splendid carriage, reached Lyon and the night had spent in his house. From more recent documents but it appears that Ghiselin Josquin has not been accompanied by Ferrara.

1503 appeared in a pressure measuring Ghiselins Petrucci. This honor was bestowed Ghiselin as the second composers Josquin Desprez.

As Josquin Desprez in the spring of 1504 left Ferrara and Jacob Obrecht was won for the post of maesttro di cappella, is to close after letters, probably again Ghiselin, the Obrecht accompanied in autumn 1504 on his journey from the North was. How long Ghiselin remained in Ferrara, is not known. He probably fled from the plague in the Netherlands. Obrecht but remained in Ferrara and died.

1507 Ghiselin detectable as a singer in the guild Onze Lieve Vrouwe in Bergen op Zoom. The document shows that he has resided at least one year there. Since the calculations of the following years are not obtained, and it 1511 does not appear in the accounts, he is believed to have died 1507-1511.
