Johannes Maccovius

Johann (es) Maccovius ( Latinized from jan Makowski, also: Makowsky, Maslowsky; * 1588 Lobsens, powiat Pilski, † June 24, 1644 in Franeker ) was a Polish Reformed theologian.

Life

Born as the son of Samuel Makowsky and his wife Margarethe Seklewska he grew up with three brothers and a sister. He came from an aristocratic Polish family that was devoted to the Reformed faith. He had attended high school in Gdansk, led by the Rector Bartholomew Keckermann and dedicated there extensive study of ethics and philosophy. Following Maccovius took place in Gdansk employment as a teacher of the son of an earl.

This son he attended the universities of Prague, Heidelberg, Marburg, Leipzig, Wittenberg and Jena. He had acquired an extensive armor in theological questions. On October 21, 1613, he came as an educator of two Polish barons to Franeker. There he received his PhD on March 8, 1614 by Doctor of Theology and opened on 15 July, a private college for theology, which was very busy.

Therefore, he was appointed Extraordinary and on 16 June the same year as a full professor of theology and physics at the University of Franeker on January 28, 1615. With Sibrand Lubbert and other theologians of the Orthodox Reformed fell constantly in dispute. This may have been instrumental in its introduction of the Reformed scholastic method in dogmatics, yielding unconsciously moved away far from John Calvin and his doctrine of predestination. The sermons to complicated buildings began to make the teaching intellectualized, and the Bible was treated as an arsenal of isolated texts.

Lubbert therefore accused him of heresy. Only on the 1618 for the next Synod of Dort was reached an agreement on the disputes. Looking back is commendable that he systematically and comprehensively powerful philosophical and scientific instruments for the reformed orthodoxy developed for the first Reformed theologian, without which this would not have to compete in a world of enemies.

Family

Maccovius was married three times. His first marriage, he went on September 27, 1627 with Antje († November 9, 1633 ), the daughter of the mayor of Leeuwarden Rombertus Uylenburg († June 3, 1624 ) and his wife Sjukje Osinga († June 17, 1619 ), a. About this marriage, he is since 1634 brother of Rembrandt van Rijn. His second marriage he came in with a daughter of Medicine professor Raphael Clingbijl. The third wife he took Fraukje, the daughter of Frank ( Frederik ) Bonnama.
