Johannes Theodor Reinhardt

Johannes Theodor Reinhardt ( born December 3, 1816 in Copenhagen, † October 23, 1882 in Frederiksberg) was a Danish zoologist.

Life and work

Reinhardt's father Johannes Christopher Hagemann Reinhardt (1776-1845) was a native of Norway zoologist and professor of zoology at the University of Copenhagen.

From 1835 to 1836 Johannes Theodor Reinhardt studied medicine, but despite the encouragement of his father, he finished his studies without success. On board the research ship Galathea he left Copenhagen in 1845 to a two-year world tour. He visited India, the Philippines, China, Hawaii and South America.

In 1847 he returned to Copenhagen and was awarded the post of curator of terrestrial vertebrates in the Royal Natural History Museum in Copenhagen. From 1850 to 1852, and from 1854 to 1856, he traveled twice to Brazil and contributed significantly to the increase in the Museum collection. From 1856 to 1878 he was professor of zoology at Technical University of Denmark. Parallel to this commitment, he was a lecturer from 1861 to 1865 and from 1865 to 1882 Professor of Zoology at the University of Copenhagen.

Reinhardt wrote numerous herpetological articles, especially about snakes. Among the taxa that were first described by him include the Puerto Rican Slim Snake ( Alsophis portoricensis ), the Indian egg-eating snake ( Elachistodon westermanni ), the Banded Bodensalmler ( Characidium fasciatum ), the Red-backed Squirrel Monkey ( Saimiri oerstedii ) and the Salvinhokko ( Mitu salvini ).

Johannes Theodor Reinhardt was a follower of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
