John Baildon

John Baildon ( born December 11, 1772 in Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland; † August 7, 1846 in Gliwice, Upper Silesia ) was a Scottish- German civil engineer and designer.

Life and career

John Baildon studied mechanics, hydraulics and technical drawing by Daniel Manson in Stirling. In 1789 he met the Prussian Oberbergamt Commissioner Friedrich Wilhelm von Reden from Upper Silesia know. By supporting John Smeaton, one of the greatest engineers of that time, he received 21 years the place of the technical consultant and was involved in the construction of the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry in Gliwice. Baildons task was to design the coke blast furnace for smelting of iron ore and oversee its operation.

After commissioning, on September 10, 1796 then flowed from the blast furnace, the first ( historically ) pig iron. His blast furnace was the first of its kind on the European mainland. These smelters in Domb in Katowice, were named after him Baildonhütte. It was a Puddlingswerk with four puddling furnaces. A road at the Baildonhütte was named after him Baildonstraße ( ulica Johna Baildona ).

According to his construction plans of Klodnitzkanal has been created with a length of 46 km in the years 1792-1812.

On the design and casting of the components of the oldest iron arch bridge on the European mainland via the Striegauer water at Laasan, Circle Schweidnitz, Lower Silesia, he was also involved. She was the first gusseisenere bridge in Germany. The five arches were cast in 1974-1975 ironworks in Malapane and erected July 30, 1796. In 1799 Baildon and Johann Friedrich Wedding drafted the plans and cost estimates for the Chorzów Chorzów, which was the most important metallurgical plant in Europe at that time. John Baildon married in 1804 with Helene Galli, settled in Gliwice and lived there until the end of his life. The cast-iron tomb is located on the Gliwice Steelworks cemetery and was reconstructed in 2012. His son Arthur Adam John Baildon (1822-1909) was knighted as " Baildon and Briestwell " in 1881.
