John Bartram

John Bartram ( born March 23, 1699 Darby, Pennsylvania, . † September 22, 1777 in Philadelphia, Penn ) was an American botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Bartram ".

He was the father of William Bartram.

Life and work

Bartram was born into a Quaker family. He collected many plants on his extensive travels throughout the eastern United States from Lake Ontario in the north to Florida in the south and the Ohio River to the west. Many of his finds were sent to collectors in Europe.

He founded Bartram 's Garden in Philadelphia and was in 1742 with Benjamin Franklin one of the founders of the American Philosophical Society.

King George III. appointed him in 1765 to the Royal botanist - a post he retained until his death.

Ehrentaxon

The moss genus Bartramia was named after him.
