John Benjamin Murphy

John Benjamin Murphy ( born December 21, 1857 as John Murphy in Appleton (Wisconsin ); † August 11, 1916 in Mackinac Iceland ) was an American surgeon. According to him, the Murphy's sign was named among others.

Murphy was born the son of Irish immigrants Michael Murphy and Ann Grimes Murphy. After graduating from Appleton High School in 1876, he studied at Rush Medical College, which he left in 1879 successfully. He practiced first in the Cook County Hospital in Illinois, then decided, however, first to go to Europe to practice there in Munich, Berlin and Heidelberg. However, most of the time he spent in Vienna with Theodor Billroth.

After his stay in Europe, he returned to Chicago, where he was in 1890 elected Professor of Surgery. In 1892 he was appointed professor of clinical surgery at the "College of Physicians and Surgeons ". From 1895 until his death in 1916 was the chief surgeon at the " Mercy Hospital ".
