John Bickersteth

John Monier Bickersteth, OBE, KCVO ( born September 6, 1921) is a British Anglican clergyman. He was from 1975 to 1988 Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Bickersteth comes from a family with clerical background for several generations; a total of six family members were bishops. He was born the son of Rev. Canon Edward Monier Bickersteth. His mother was a friend of the actress Dame Sybil Thorndike.

Bickersteth spent his childhood in London and grew up in a village near Canterbury in Kent on. He attended Rugby School and Christ Church College, Oxford University. From 1941 to 1946 he was drafted into military service and military service. He served in the Buffs, the 3rd Infantry Regiment ( Royal East Kent Regiment), and participated in the Allied landing in Normandy. In addition, he was stationed with the Royal Artillery in British India.

His theological training as a priest was made on Wells Theological College. In 1950 he was ordained a deacon; In 1951 the ordination to the priesthood. At the beginning of a priestly career was from 1950 to 1954 a position as a vicar ( Curate ) on the St Matthew 's Church in Moorfields district in Bristol. From 1954 to 1962 he worked at the Ministry Training Convention in the formation of priests; besides, he was pastor (Vicar ) held at St John 's Church, Hurst Green, Surrey. There followed in 1962 a position as pastor (Vicar ) at St Stephen's Church in Chatham in Kent.

In 1970 he was ordained a bishop. He was from 1970 to 1975 Suffragan Bishop of Warrington. 1975 Bickersteth was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II for the 75th Bishop of Bath and Wells in the Church of England. In 1985, he celebrated a Mass at a hippie festival, which caused a sensation. End of October 1988, he went into retirement. After retiring from the church service, he criticized the Church of England bishops appoint too many in his opinion.

He was Director (Director) of the Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

From 1979 to 1989 he held the honorary office of the Clerk of the Closet. He was thus the first chaplain of the Queen Member of the Royal household.

Bickersteth is married; on April 20, 1955, he married Rosemary Stevens, the daughter of Edward Stevens and Muriel Cleveland -Stevens.

Membership in the House of Lords

Bickersteth was a member in his capacity as Bishop of Bath and Wells from October 1981 to October 1988 as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords officially. His inaugural address was delivered on 11 November 1982 housing policy and on Homelessness, particularly homelessness among young people. In Hansard word posts Bickersteths from the years 1982 to 1987 are documented. In October 1987, he enlisted in the House of Lords last to speak. His membership in the House of Lords ended with his retirement as Bishop of Bath and Wells in October 1988.
