John Braine
John Gerard Braine ( born April 13, 1922 in Bradford, England, † October 28, 1986 in London, England ) was a British author.
Life
John Braine left the St. Bede's Grammar School at 16 and worked in a shop, a laboratory and a factory before he became librarian after the Second World War. Although he published twelve works of fiction, he is now best known for his first novel, The Way Up ( Room at the Top ) from 1957, which was filmed in 1959 by Jack Clayton. Braine is usually associated with the Angry Young Men movement.
