John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll

John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll KT PC (* around 1693 in the House of Argyll, Scotland, † November 9, 1770 in London) was a Scottish nobleman and politician.

Life

John Campbell was the eldest son of Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll ( 1629-1685 ), and his wife Elizabeth Elphinstone ( 1677-1758 ), a daughter of John Elphinstone, 8th Lord Elphinstone and Isabel Maitland.

John Campbell made ​​a career in the British Army and was appointed as a 19 -year-old lieutenant colonel. However, he soon became a deputy for Buteshire (1713-1715), Elgin burghs (1715-1722 and 1725-1727) and finally Dunbartonshire ( 1727-1761 ). During his parliamentary time he was appointed colonel of the 39th Regiment of Foot ( 1737-1738 ) and of the 21st Regiment of Foot ( 1738-1752 ) appointed and distinguished himself at the Battle of Dettingen (1741 ) from. In the following years he was promoted several times: Brigadier General ( 1743), Lieutenant General ( 1747 ) General ( 1765 ) and honorary colonel of the North British Dragoons (1752 ) until his death.

When his cousin died in 1761, he inherited the title. At the same time he gave up his seat in the House of Commons and was appointed governor of Limerick. His Scottish peers elected him one of its representatives (Representative Peer ) in the House of Lords. A year later, Campbell was appointed to the Privy Council. In 1765 he was awarded the Order of thistle.

In 1720, John Campbell married in London Mary Bellenden ( 1705-1736 ), a daughter of John Bellenden, 2nd Baron Bellenden of Broughton, and Lady Mary Moore. From the joint compound has three children were born:
