John Connolly (bishop)

John Connolly OP ( * 1750; according to other sources 1751 in Monknewton in Slane, County Meath, Ireland, † February 6, 1825 in New York City ) was Bishop of New York.

Life

John Connolly joined the Dominican Order, who sent him to study in Rome. On September 24, 1774, he was ordained priest and remained in Rome as a professor, liaison with the Irish bishops and prior of the Dominkanerkonvents of San Clemente.

Pope Pius VII appointed Connolly on October 4, 1814 the second bishop of New York. On 6 November of the same year he donated the Archbishop of Fermo, Cardinal Cesare Brancadoro, episcopal ordination. Co-consecrators were the Archbishops Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri and Giovanni Marchetti.

Only a year after his consecration he reached New York. He, however, was the first bishop on the spot, as his predecessor Richard Luke Concanen OP had died before crossing to America.
