John Erskine, 18th Earl of Mar

John Erskine (* unbek, † October 28, 1572 in Stirling Castle), 18th Earl of Mar, 6th Lord Erskine, de jure 1st Earl of Mar, was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

His father was John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine, his mother was Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll.

With the death of his father in the late summer of 1555, he took over the title of 6th Lord Erskine and de jure 18th Earl of Mar ( first ceremony ). This title was confirmed by deed dated June 23, 1565 de facto. The title of 1st Earl of Mar ( seventh award ) was awarded to him by the " House of Lords Privileges Committe " posthumously to July 20, 1565 February 26, 1875.

John Erskine was born probably around 1530 1548 belonged to him the Commandery of Inchmahome Priory.; in the period 1548-1556, he is also listed as abbot of the already destroyed in 1544 in the Scottish Reformation Dryburgh Abbey, which is also to be regarded as Commandery.

As a successful politician, he was one of the most influential nobles of that time. 1561 he was appointed by Queen Mary in the secret Privy Council.

He was Keeper of Edinburgh Castle until March 1567 during which time he was one of the nobles who forced the Queen to abdicate.; he was also one of those who imprison Mary in Loch Leven Castle. As a consequence, 1567-1571, he was one of the regent of Scotland. The young king James VI. was in his care and has been in the security of Stirling Castle by him and his wife "to be conserved, nursed, and upbrought " educated.

By his marriage, closed 1556 with Annabel Murray, a daughter of William Murray of Tullibardine, he had two sons: John ( later 19th Earl ) and Charles, and a daughter, Mary.
