John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine

John Erskine (* unbek; † late summer 1555), 5th Lord Erskine, de jure 17th Earl of Mar, was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

His father was Robert Erskine, 4th Lord Erskine, his mother was Isabel Campbell, a daughter of George Campbell of Loudoun.

With his father's death at the Battle of Flodden Field on September 9, 1513, he assumed the title of 5th Lord Erskine and de jure 17th Earl of Mar ( first ceremony ). This title was confirmed posthumously by deed dated June 23, 1565.

John Erskine was born probably around 1490, and in 1510 he was knighted. In 1515, he served as a Scottish ambassador at the French court. The following year he was appointed by John Stewart in the regency for the minor King James V., at the same time he was appointed commander of Stirling Castle. He held up to the assumption of the regency by Archibald Douglas Both functions. As a result, he is once again named as guardian of Edinburgh Castle, but without year.

In his marriage, closed with Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll, he had five sons: Robert (Master of Erskine to 1547 ), Thomas (Master of Erskine to 1551 ), John ( later Earl of Mar), and Arthur Alexander, and three daughters; Katherine, Margaret and Janet.
