John Esposito

John Louis Esposito ( born May 19, 1940) is an American scholar of Islam. Currently he is Professor of International Affairs and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

Life

Esposito was born in Brooklyn, New York City, grew up as a Roman Catholic on in an Italian- American neighborhood and spent a decade in a Catholic monastery. After his first degree, he worked as a management consultant and teacher at a high school. He then earned a master's degree in theology at St. John's University in 1974 and a PhD at Temple University, Pennsylvania in 1974; according to Islamic studies he held postdoctoral positions at Harvard and Oxford. At the Jesuit College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts he held religious studies seminars; there he had the Loyola Chair for the Study of East Mittlerer held and presided over the Center for International Studies. At Georgetown University, Esposito is University Professor and teaches Religious Studies, International Affairs and Islamic Studies. In 1988 he was elected Chairman of the Middle East Studies Association of North America ( MESA). He was also, inter alia, President of the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies. He has received, among others Awards from the American Academy of Religion ( Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion 2005), whose Vice-President ( 2012) and President (2013 ) he was last. He is among other things Member of the EU Radicalisation Awareness Network and Ambassador for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.
