John Farmer (composer)

John Farmer (* around 1570 probably in London, † after 1601) was an English composer and one of the lesser-known representative of the English Madrigal School.

Little is known about the circumstances of Farmers. He was probably first organist in London. In 1595 he was appointed organist of Christ Church Cathedral Dublin. In 1600 he returned to London, but it is not known in which position he worked there.

From Farmer, a book was published with four-part madrigals. He was also a chief collaborator on the book of Psalms by Michael East. In various collections also instrumental works Farmers have survived. His most famous work is probably Fair Phyllis I Saw.
