John Forbes (poet)

John Forbes ( born 1950 in Melbourne, † January 23, 1998 in Melbourne) was an Australian poet.

Life

John Forbes was born in 1950 in Melbourne, New South Wales, and grew up in New Guinea, Malaysia and Sydney. His father was a civil employee meteorologist at the Royal Australian Air Force. Towards the end of the sixties Forbes had begun to write poetry. His first 1969 been sent to Poetry Australia manuscripts were, however, by the editor of the magazine, John Tranter, rejected. During the seventies Forbes matured ' art, and in 1981 brought John Tranter Forbes ' second book, Stalin 's Holidays out. Forbes ' interest in military history, philosophy, Catholicism, art theory and policy were also incorporated in its most ironic held poems. After working in the meantime as a furniture mover, he was literary editor and later last teacher of creative writing at the University of Melbourne. On January 23, 1998, he died unexpectedly at the age of 47 of a heart attack at his home in Melbourne.
