John Gillies (botanist)

John Gillies (* 1792 in Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland, † November 24, 1834 in Edinburgh) was a Scottish physician and plant collector. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Gillies ".

Life and work

Gillies was a naval doctor; as a 28- year-old he hoped to escape the early death by consumption by a trip to South America. He stayed for eight years in South America and collected a variety of plants. His remaining after returning to Europe six years of life, he used to order his large collection of plants and to give each in parts to friendly botanists for further evaluation. So today are parts to find his collection of plants scattered in various herbaria.
