John Grefe

John Alan Grefe ( born September 6, 1947 in Hoboken (New Jersey), † December 22, 2013 in San Francisco) was an American chess player and author.

His biggest success was the split of chess with Lubomir Kavalek first place in the United States Chess Championship 1973 in El Paso (Texas ). At this time he had no title and no international Elo rating. He was a devotee of Guru Maharaj Ji. The title of International Master received Grefe 1975. Thereafter stagnated his chess career. He was able to defeat many well-known players in each match and win but no major tournaments more.

Grefe was considered a good tactician and opening expert. For Walter Browne, he worked Interzonal in 1976 as Sekundant. Later Grefe also wrote several chess books.

At the age of 66 years Grefe died of kidney cancer.
