John Hewer

John Hewer ( born January 13, 1922 in Leyton, Essex, † March 16, 2008 in Twickenham, Middlesex ) was a British actor and an advertising icon ( Captain Iglo ).

Life

He spent his acting career mainly in British theaters (London 's Players Theatre, West End Theatre ). He has performed in many musicals, outstanding in this respect was his starring role opposite Julie Andrews in The Boy Friend on Broadway in the 1950s.

In cinema and only rarely seen television roles, but he was 1967-1977 host of the Canadian prime time variety show The Pig and Whistle. Worldwide fame he gained through the presentation of advertising for fish sticks Figure Captain Iglo (original Captain Birdseye ). These TV spots ran intermittently 1967-1998, until he was replaced by a younger actor.
