John Holland (athlete)

John Holland ( John Macfarlane "Dutch " Holland, born December 20, 1926 in Auckland, † 9 June 1990) was a New Zealand athlete, who competed mainly in the hurdles.

Career

After Holland had missed the finals at the 1948 Olympic Games in London in the 400 - meter hurdles, he celebrated at the British Empire Games in 1950 in his hometown his first international medal success. In the 440- yards hurdles he won behind Duncan White from Ceylon the silver medal. He also took along with his team-mates David Batten, Derek Stewart and Jack Sutherland in third place in the 4 x 440 yards relay. About 120 yards hurdles, he finished fifth.

His most important result achieved Holland at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. In the 400 - meter hurdles, he won behind the Americans Charles Moore and Yuri Litujew from the Soviet Union the bronze medal.

Addition was 1.91 m wide and 81 kg Holland eleven New Zealand champion and held the national records over 440 yards and 400 meters hurdles. He was married and had two sons. Originally he was a teacher, but later worked a long time for the oil company Shell.
