John I, Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg

John I, Prince of Anhalt - Bernburg († June 5, 1291 ) was a German sovereign of the race of Ascanians.

Life

John I was the eldest son of Prince Bernhard I of Anhalt -Bernburg and Sophie, daughter of King Abel of Denmark. After his father's death in 1287, the legacy was - as usual in the house of Ascanians - divided among the sons. Johann ruled the principality of Anhalt- Bernburg then together with his younger brother Bernhard II The younger brothers, Albert and Henry were devoted to the ecclesiastical state and renounced all claims. Rudolph, the youngest son of Bernard I, was no longer alive at time of death of the father may already own.

Johann was his life unmarried and childless. After his death in 1291, his brother and co-regent Bernhard II became sole ruler of Anhalt- Bernburg.
