John II Platyn

John Platys (also Platynus ) was an East Roman Patrician and Exarch of Ravenna.

John appears to have been appointed as the successor of Theodorus in the year 686 to the Exarch of Ravenna. Even before the death of Pope Conon in the same year he was asked by the archdeacon Paschal for help in the anticipated election of a pope, for which the Paschal Exarch certain donations offered, obviously bribes. In fact, John instructed his representative in Rome, to provide for the election of Paschal. Still, could not enforce this. He asked 687 the exarch turn for help and offered him 100 pounds of gold for his support what John also accepted. When John came to Rome secretly and unexpectedly, he found, however, that Sergius had already accepted as pope, who met in Rome on a broad consensus.

John also recognized as the new Pope Sergius, but called for this purpose with success which he promised by Paschalis 100 gold pounds a. In order to raise the sum, Sergius had to include some candlesticks and crowns, which had been hung in St Peter's before the altar, can be removed, until the sum had been reached. Only after the election was formally confirmed by John.

The term of office of John as Exarch can not be determined accurately. While 686 is declared the arrival date, will be busy in the next exarch Theophylact for the period 701-705. Since fall two emperors change to this time, even the Exarchate in the course of this change of government seems to have been re- occupied, without knowing by whom.
