Antipope Paschal

Paschal I († 692 ) was from September to December 687 (according to another interpretation to 692 ) anti-pope.

After the brief pontificate of Pope Conon, who had died on 21 September 687, there were two potential successors. One of them, Theodore II, was already before Conon pontificate, imposed after the death of John V., of a Roman military party to the ( counter-) Pope, but was later dropped a few weeks in favor of Conon. After his death, he reported again to his " claim " on the throne of Peter.

Counter Theodor archdeacon Paschal stepped in with the not quite clean agents. He bribed - before Conon 's death - the Exarch of Ravenna, John Platys, with 100 pounds of gold, so that it ordered his officials in Rome to vote for Paschalis.

But the party of Theodore was faster and occupied ado the inner chambers of the Lateran, while Paschal and his followers had to stop in the outer. Since none of the candidates wanted to give in, was remembered as when choosing Conon, a third candidate and both fractions collected on 15 December 687 the Titularpriester of St. Susanna, Sergius, the successor of Pope Conon.

The new pope had the support of the Roman population, which stormed the Lateran and the squatters threw. While Theodor accepted his defeat and Sergius ' recognized choice, Paschalis persisted in his claim. He tried to bring the Exarch of Ravenna to Rome, for which he promised him an additional 100 pounds of gold. In fact, the imperial governor also appeared in Rome, but now spoke in favor of Sergius and let Paschalis fall. ( 100 pounds of gold now paid him Sergius. )

Completely helpless and destitute Paschalis still not recognized Sergius ' choice and intrigued against him, until he sold as a deacon, accused of witchcraft, and was banished to a monastery. He died there in 692, until at last on his claim to the succession Conon insisting.

Antipope Paschal was actually only a few months; but because he never gave up his claim or resigned, including a multi-year pontificate ( 687-692 ) can be attributed to him. It is also possible to completely deny him the title Pope, since its inauguration was incomplete.
