John III of Navarre

Johann III. (* 1469, † June 17, 1516 in Monains ) was from 1484 to 1512 King of Navarre; He is also known by the name of Jean d' Albret.

He was the fourth son of Alain d' Albret, Count of Gavre and Castres, and Françoise de Châtillon († 1481 ), Countess of Perigord and Viscountess of Limoges.

On July 14, 1484, he married Catherine of Navarre in Orthez (* 1470, † 1517) which had previously become Queen of Navarre, Countess of Foix and Bigorre and Viscountess of Béarn in the year, the daughter of Gaston de Foix, the prematurely deceased Crown Prince of Navarre. At her side was Jean d' Albret King of Navarre, to the couple in 1512 by Ferdinand II, King of Aragon, who represented his own inheritance claims, was expelled.

Jean d' Albret and John III. and Catherine had 13 children, most notably

  • Henry II, * 1503, † 1555, Count of Foix and Bigorre, Viscount of Béarn and Marsan ( the area around Mont -de- Marsan ), titular King of Navarre
  • Isabelle d' Albret, Infanta of Navarre, later wife of René I Vicomte de Rohan

Jean d' Albret died before his father, so that he could take a title from its heritage. His mother's inheritance went to his older siblings, probably because he already had with the crown of Navarre over possession.
