John James Sainsbury

John James Sainsbury ( born June 12, 1844 in Lambeth, † 1928) was a British entrepreneur. He founded the British supermarket chain Sainsbury's.

He started with a shop in Holborn, City of London. At the time of his death, the company had more than 200 branches. Today, the J Sainsbury plc include (listed since 1973) to 934 stores, of which 557 supermarkets and 377 (smaller) consumer markets. His descendants still own 21 % of the shares of the company.
