John Jewel

John Jewel ( May 22nd 1522 stalls, Devonshire, † September 23, 1571 in Moktonfarley ) was Bishop of Salisbury and defender of the Church of England.

Life

Jewel studied at Merton College, Oxford and has been a leader in the reforms under King Edward VI. involved; at the accession Maria I.Tudor he had to leave England. The years of exile from his ardor cooled, and when he returned again under Elizabeth I Tudor, he distinguished himself as a defender of the established church. 1560 was Jewel Bishop of Salisbury, and in 1562 he published " The Apology of the English Church " in which he maintained the doctrine of the divine right of king. He did not recognize the authority of the Council of Trent and defended Protestantism. His book found at Queen Elizabeth I of England and was very popular as an official of the Church of England 's position.
