As a leading member of the social society of his native city, he was commissioned late 19th and early 20th century, with many new buildings with the design and planning; alone in 1908, he made his architectural office and more than 600 design concepts from. In his work there is also the 1895 Batman resulting Waldron House, which has been described in a local historic preservation survey as " most eccentric mansion " of the city: 28 Also orders for smaller houses were accepted of him; . in 1902 he published in book form a collection of designs for houses, most of which elements of classical architecture, Queen Anne Style, Neo-Romanesque and embroidery style combined together to created a distinctive and popular style, described by local historians as "Free Classic" was: . xxix

One of the buildings, the heranzog Nichols as a conductive example of his architectural ideals, was the house that he designed for himself and his wife at the College Avenue north of the city center. After its construction in 1900, he used this house extensively in his book as a demonstration for his understanding of architecture. 4

Nichols moved two years after the completion of the house again, but kept it in his possession until he sold it in 1905 to the Indianapolis Southern Railroad, which in the vicinity of its plot built a railway line at that time. With the exception of twelve years, where in the house lived a local railway staff, it has only rarely used the railway company. In 1940 the company, which had since been swallowed by the Illinois Central Railroad, the building sold. From then on, the ownership of the house changed hands several times. In the second half of the 20th century, the building began to fall into disrepair, but in the 1980s began a new owner with the renovation of the house and the restoration of the original state. 2

Architecture

Characteristic of its architects, the Nichols House on a mixture of different architectural styles. Some design elements appeal to ancient Greek temples, such as through the use of Corinthian columns that support the roof of the entrance porch. Xxix

The house itself has an unusual floor plan. The west side is straight, the east side has a side wing on. The ends lying to the north and south are not straight, but pentagonal shaped. The basement building is one storey and has five rooms. The wood frame structure is clad with horizontal wood planks. The Cedar Shingle Roof was later replaced by a fiberglass roof. Both original roof and the later replacement are gabled roofs, with the exception of the roofs of the entrance porch and the side wing on the back. 2

Inside paneling cover of oak and walnut wood most of the walls, the floor boards are made of cherry wood. Among the still original interior elements are the open fireplace which still has the original built hearth. Daylight gets the interior of the house by several large windows from which a disproportionately large number is located in the pentagon -shaped ends of the building. While some of these windows are casement window and other Aufschiebfenster, they put all of many small diamond -shaped panes together: 2 and they thus follow a pattern that Nichols has used in many of his designs. Related buildings

Directly behind Nichols ' house is his studio, a separate two-storey building, which is built in a similar style, such as his home. 2 However, it is significantly simpler and has an open floor plan with simple and plain design. 3 In the past the studio has been neglected in the same way as the house, but this outbuilding was omitted from the renovation of the house. 4

A similar house is located at the Rogers Street in Prospect Hill, near four other works of the architect. Although it was not Nichols, but is basically an image of its own house; : 43, both houses are clad with horizontal boards and have pentagonal end: 44.
