John L. Schoolcraft

John Lawrence Schoolcraft (* 1804 in Albany, New York, † July 7, 1860 in St. Catharines, Canada ) was an American politician. Between 1849 and 1853 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Lawrence Schoolcraft was born in the beginning of the 19th century in Albany and grew up there. He received a limited education. He then went to commercial transactions. Politically he belonged at that time to the Whig party. In the congressional elections of 1848 for the 31 Congress he was in the 13th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John I. Slingerland on March 4, 1849. After a successful re-election he resigned in 1852 to run again and was eliminated after March 3, 1853 from the Congress of. After his time Congress he was elected president of the Commercial Bank in Albany and held this post from 1854 until his death. He joined the Republican Party. As a delegate, he was started in 1860 at the Republican National Convention in Chicago in part. He died on July 7, 1860 on our way back home in St. Catharines and was then buried in the Rural Cemetery in Albany.

His house in Guilderland, known as John Schoolcraft House has been added to the list of the National Register of Historic Places on November 10, 1982.
