John Lightfoot

John Lightfoot (* March 29, 1602 in Stoke -upon -Trent, † December 6, 1675 in Ely ) was a British Hebrew scholar, pastor and college rector.

Life

Lightfoot studied at Cambridge. Under the influence of Sir Rowland Cotton, he began to study Semitic languages. From 1629 he published several works in which he explained Christian literature with a knowledge of the Talmud and commented. Since 1643 he was a minister in Much Munden ( Hertfordshire) and rector of the College Catharine Hall, Cambridge. The appointment as pastor held Lightfoot until his death. Because of his sympathy for the Presbyterianism he was during the English Civil War as a supporter of Parliament. On the Westminster Assembly from 1643 to 1649 and the Savoy Conference in 1661 he defended moderate Presbyterian views. From 1654 to 1657 he was an employee (also called " London Polyglot " ) when creating the Biblia Sacra Polyglotta, a Bible Synopsis in six volumes, edited by Brian Walton.
