Brian Walton (bishop)

Brian Walton (* 1600 in Cleveland, (Yorkshire ), † November 29, 1661 in London) was a British theologian, orientalist, Bishop of Chester and editor of the London Polyglot.

Life

Walton took first in 1614 his studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge on. In 1618, he moved to Peterhouse College, Cambridge, where he was ordained a priest in 1623. Also in 1623 he became Master of Arts, in 1639 he received the doctorate. From 1654 to 1657 he worked as an editor at the Biblia Sacra Polyglotta (also called " London Polyglot "), and a synopsis in six volumes on a subscription basis. The work includes texts of the Bible in nine languages ​​: Hebrew, Aramaic, Samaritan, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Altäthiopisch, Greek and Latin. The Polyglot was created with the participation of authors James Ussher, John Lightfoot, Edward Pococke, Edmund Castell, Abraham Wheelocke, Patrick Young, Thomas Hyde and Thomas Greaves.
