John Lucas (philosopher)

John Randolph Lucas ( born June 18, 1929) is an English philosopher. He is known for his reception of Gödel incompleteness theorem in between working on Minds, Machines and Gödel. ( From about consciousness, machines and Gödel )

Life and work

John Randolph Lucas was trained 1942-1947 at Winchester College. He transferred to Balliol College of Oxford, where he first and later early history and philosophy studied mathematics. His bachelor he graduated in 1951 with honors, a Masters in 1954 in Oxford. He was a research assistant and tutor at Merton College and Corpus Christi College, 1953-1956. Starting from 1960 until his retirement he was a Fellow and Tutor of Merton College, Oxford. There he founded the Oxford Consumer Group and was Chairman until '63. His lectures include the Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh 1971-1973, Margaret Harris lecture at the University of Dundee (1981 ) and Harry Jelema lecture at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan ( 1987). In 1988 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. Between 1990 and 1996 he taught philosophy at Oxford. Between 1991 and 1993, he sat in front of the British Society for Philosophy of Science.
