John M. Ford

John Milo "Mike" Ford ( born April 10, 1957 in East Chicago, Indiana, † 25 September 2006 in Minneapolis, Minnesota ) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer, poet and game designer.

Life

John M. Ford grew up in Whiting, Indiana and attended in the 1970s, Indiana University Bloomington, where he was a member of the local SF club and at the Society for Creative Anachronism participated (as Miles Atherton de Grey ). He left the university in 1978 and moved to New York because he was able to participate in the newly founded Isaac Asimov 's Science Fiction Magazine. He published there as well as other short stories countless posts and poetry before he went to Minneapolis in 1990.

As early as 1975, Ford published some short stories in the magazines Analog, Omni and Asimov 's Science Fiction. The first novel Web Of Angels was an early example of cyberpunk, while The Princes Of The Air was a Space Opera and The Dragon Waiting a fantasy alternate world history, the 1984 World Fantasy Award won. The Philip K. Dick Award Ford got a decade later for Growing Up Weightless. In his two novels from the Star Trek world, he gave the Klingons a different role than that of the dumb villains of the first TV series, thus creating the basis for their role in later series; later he wrote several additional texts for Star Trek role-playing games, in which he delves deeper into the Klingons. For novels from the series The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, he drew maps.

In addition to his novels, he wrote other books with GURPS role-playing games and participated in the Shared World Project Liavek. The Origins Award for Best RPG stuff he won three times. In 1998, he won the Poetry Prize Rhysling Award. Some children's books were published under a pseudonym from him, which was never known.

Since childhood, John M. Ford was already suffering from a severe diabetes and consequent renal failure. 2000 was, after years of dialysis significantly improved by a kidney transplant his life before he was found on 25 September 2006 by his long-time girlfriend dead at his desk.
