John McCabe (composer)

John McCabe CBE (* April 21, 1939 in Huyton, Merseyside ) is an English pianist and composer.

Life

He studied in Manchester from 1957 to 1960 at the University and from 1960 to 1964 at the Royal College of Music in piano and composition. Then he continued his composition studies in Munich with Harald Genzmer continued at the Academy of Music.

In 1969 he was awarded the Gaudeamus Prize for the interpretation of contemporary music. As a teacher, he taught 1965-1968 Piano at the University of Cardiff. In 1977 he was awarded the Ivor Novello Award. In 1983 he became director of the London College of Music.

John McCabe's compositional output includes symphonies, concertos, ballets, chamber and piano music. As a pianist he is particularly committed to contemporary (Adams, Carter, Corigliano ) and for British composers ( Bax, Britten, Rawsthorne ). Among his most outstanding achievements is still the recording of the complete piano sonatas of Joseph Haydn.

McCabe was also active as a composer for film music. He made his debut in 1972 with the music for the horror movie The Fear - Fear of the night. From 1973 to 1975 he was involved in the television series Sam. In the 1980s, still followed a few works for television.
