John McCormack (Boxer)

John McCormack ( born January 9, 1935 in Glasgow / Scotland, United Kingdom ) is a retired British middleweight boxer.

Amateur

McCormack won 103 amateur fights at six defeats. In 1956 he won the Scottish and British Championships Light Middleweight and was then sent as a British representative to the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. He won there in his weight class bronze medal after he was defeated in the semifinals of the U.S. citizen José Torres on points.

Professional career

In 1957 he turned professional and in July 1958 Scottish middleweight champion. In September 1959, he managed to win the combined Commonwealth and British champion middleweight title. His opponent Terry Downes was disqualified in the eighth round. The rematch McCormack lost two months later, however, by way of knockout in the eighth round.

In October 1961, he fought for the vacant European middleweight title with a points victory over the Dutch Harko Kokmeijer. McCormack's predecessors Gustav " Bubi " Scholz from Germany was entitled to resign ( manslaughter of his wife ) because of his imprisonment. January 1962, he defended the title with a points victory against the German Heinz Freytag. But already a month later he was disqualified in the title fight against the Danes Christian Christensen in the fourth round.

His old opponent Terry Downes had now resigned the British Middleweight title. McCormack fought in November 1962 against George Aldridge for the title, but was knocked out in the fourth round.

His last fight he took against his Irish namesake in June 1966 in London's Royal Albert Hall. The Irishman John " Young" McCormack won on points.
