John McGough

John McGough ( born December 13, 1876 in Monaghan, † 1967) was a British athlete who was successful as a middle-distance runner at the beginning of the 20th century.

He was born in Ireland, but spent most of his life in Scotland. He worked at the Post Office in Glasgow, where he was a member of Bellahouston Harriers at the same time.

Career

John McGough won a total of 15 Scottish (sc ) and Irish ( ir) National Championships:

In addition, he participated in two Olympic Games: the 1906 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 1908 Olympic Games in London.

  • In Athens, he launched more than 800 m, 1500 m and 5 miles. About 800 meters he already retired from the lead. His time has not been determined.
  • Over 1500 meters, he won his heat in 4:18,8 minutes. In the final, he was able to increase significantly and was on target just behind the Americans James Lightbody, who won in 4:12,0 min the gold medal. John McGough came in 4:12,6 min in second place ahead of Sweden's Kristian Hellström (third in 4:13,4 min).
  • About five miles he reached while the goal, but did not finish in the top three. His time has not been determined.
  • In London McGough was only about his special line, the 1500 m, at the start and was in third 4:16,4 minutes of its forward travel. He was eliminated because only the lead winners were considered qualified.
