Biography

John Michael Talbot grew up in a religious Methodist family. Right after school he was at the age of 15 years, guitarist of the band Mason Proffit, a country / folk / rock band who played his older brother Terry. The band produced five albums and was one of the pioneers of the more successful country-rock bands like the Eagles.

After the initial success with the band Talbot employed with different religions Native American, Buddhism and finally with Christianity. He and his brother were part of the Jesus People and published together the album The Talbot Bros. at Warner Brothers.

Two solo albums followed: John Michael Talbot (1976 ) and The New Earth ( 1977).

John Michael Talbot was married, the couple divorced and the daughter grew up with their mother. Talbot withdrew after the divorce from the public. He dealt with the life of Francis of Assisi and began studying at a Franciscan center in Indianapolis. He converted to Catholicism and joined the secular Franciscan Order in 1978. He built a small chapel and planned to live as a hermit. Due to many requests for concerts and musical productions, he began again in 1979 to produce guitars and vocal music in a quiet, contemplative style. He moved to a building in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, which he had already bought in time with Mason Proffit. Talbot founded his own community, the Brothers and Sisters of Charity at Little Portion Hermitage. It is a monastic community with celibate brothers, sisters and families. In 1989 Talbot married, with the permission of the Church, for the second time. For many years, Talbot supports the work of Mercy Corps.
