John Riley (poet)

John Riley ( born 1937 in Leeds, † October 27 or October 28, 1978 ) was a British poet who is associated with the British Poetry Revival (English " revival of British poetry" ).

Riley was born in Leeds and grew up there. He served from 1956 to 1958 in the Royal Air Force and then attended Pembroke College, Cambridge. There he made his degree in 1961 and subsequently worked as a teacher in various schools in the area around Cambridge. During this time he met many writers and poets of the " Cambridge Group" know, the nucleus of the British Poetry Revival.

In 1969 he took a job as a teacher in the Oxford area. This year, he founded with his friend Tim Longville the " Grosseteste Press," and two years later, in 1971, laid the two the magazine " Grosseteste Review". In 1970, Riley had retired from the teaching profession to return to Leeds and to devote his whole work force writing. In 1977, he joined the Orthodox Church. In the night from 27 to 28 October 1978, he was murdered near his house.

His works were influenced by Charles Olson and Osip Mandelstam Emiljewitsch whose works he translated into English. His first book, Ancient and Modern was published in 1967 and in 1980, after his death the book The Collected Works. In the latter be important for the seal long poem Czargrad is printed in full for the first time. In Carcanet Press published in 1995 "A selected Poems".
