John Robichaux

John Robichaux ( born January 16, 1866 in Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, † 1939 in New Orleans, Louisiana) was an American bandleader, drummer and violinist of the New Orleans Jazz.

Robichaux moved in 1891 to New Orleans, where he was from 1892 to 1903, the bass drummer of the " Excelsior Brass Band ". However, starting in 1893, he also led his own bands in New Orleans, where he played the violin. He was finally in the 1910s, one of the top orchestras in the city, who played for the upper classes. The number of band members was in 1913 thirty-six musicians. Among them were such well-known New Orleans veterans such as Bud Scott, Lorenzo Tio and Manuel Perez. His bands played not only jazz, but generally, the popular music of the time, including a lot of ragtime. 1917 to 1927 he played in the Lyric Theatre in New Orleans, and later in hotels. Many of his arrangements and compositions have been preserved and the William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University. Robichaux refused to take on records.

Robichaux also played accordion. He was the uncle of Joe Robichaux and the eponymous New Orleans drummer John Robichaux.
