John Sangster

John Sangster ( born November 17, 1928 in Melbourne, † October 26, 1995 in Brisbane ) was an Australian jazz musician ( composer, arranger, vibraphonist and drummer ). After Digby Fairweather, he was one of the central Australian jazz musicians of the 1980s.

Life and work

Sangster was initially known as a trombonist with Graeme Bell and his Australian Jazz Band, with which he was traveling in the UK, Germany, Japan and Korea, 1950-1955; while he was playing a recording with Humphrey Lyttelton also. He joined the cornet and then the drums and then played with Ray Price. In the late 1950s, he discovered the vibraphone and the Modern Jazz. In the early 1960s he belonged to the group of Don Burrows, before he founded his own company and dealt with the music of Sun Ra and Archie Shepp. In 1967 he joined during the Expo 67 in Montreal (later also during Expo '70 in Osaka ) with the band of Burrows. In 1969 he opened for rock music and was part of the progressive rock band Tully, who accompanied the Australian production of the musical Hair. In his album Ahead of Hair, he reflected these experiences. During the 1970s, Sangster released a number of albums that were inspired by The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit Suite1973 about. With Alex Pertout, Graeme Lyall, Keith Hounslow and the Pro Musica strings he played a compositions by Tony Gould.

In addition Sangster also wrote film music for documentaries, such as for early films for nature conservation, the Australian Museum in 1971 and 1972 produced ( Australia and all that jazz ). In 1988 he published his autobiography Seeing the Rafters.
