John Shipley, Baron Shipley

John Warren Shipley, Shipley Baron, of Gosforth in the County of Tyne and Wear OBE ( born July 5, 1946 in Whitby, North Yorkshire ) is a British politician of the Liberal Party and now the Liberal Democrats, who unsuccessfully for elected to the five times House of Commons stood as a candidate and is a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2010.

Life

Career and unsuccessful House of candidatures

Shipley, who began his professional career in 1969-1971 at Procter & Gamble, was from 1971 to 2005 Employees of The Open University and most recently 1997-2005 Regional Director for the North and the European Union.

The mid-1970s he began his political career in the Liberal Party and was a candidate for them by the lower house elections on February 28, 1974 and on October 10, 1974 at constituency Blyth each unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons and defeated in two

In the general election on May 3, 1979, he competed again in the constituency of Hexham unsuccessfully for a parliamentary seat. His two candidates in the constituency Newcastle North in the elections on June 9, 1983 and on June 11, 1987 were unsuccessful.

Local politician and member of the House of Lords

In 1975, he was however the first time elected a member of the City Council of Newcastle upon Tyne and was this for 37 years until 2012. Later was Shipley, who was a member of the police administration of Northumberland in the 1980s, from 1988 to 1998 leader of the opposition in the City Council of Newcastle upon Tyne. For his services he was in 1995 awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire. In the 1990s, he was also the first time a member of the Passenger Transport Administration of Tyne and Wear and held this function again from 2004 to 2006. Simultaneously he worked from 2004 to 2006 on the board of the operating company for the Newcastle airport and from 2005 to 2012 and member of the board for the competent Regional North East England development Agency One North East Region. Between 2006 and 2010 he also served as majority leader in the City Council of Newcastle upon Tyne.

By Letters Patent of July 14, 2010 Shipley was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Shipley of Gosforth in the County of Tyne and Wear to the peerage. Shortly thereafter, took place on July 15, 2010 his Introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords. In the upper house he belongs to the Group of the Liberal Democrats.

Since 2010 he has been Vice President of the Local Government Association (LGA ), which the German Association of Cities and Municipalities represents the comparable interests of local governments.
