John Smith, Baron Kirkhill

John Farquharson Smith, Baron Kirk Hill ( born May 7, 1930) is a British Labour Party politician and life peer.

Life and career

Smith was born on 7 May 1930, son of Alexander Findlay Smith and Ann Farquharson.

He was from 1971 to 1975, Lord Provost of the City of Aberdeen and Minister of State for Scotland from August 8, 1975 through December 15, 1978.

He was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board 1979 until 1982.

From 1991 to 2001 he was a delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the WEU; where he was from 1991 to 1995 Chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights.

In March 2012, caused a car accident Kirk Hills stir, and he gave his driver's license.

Membership in the House of Lords

Smith was appointed on 17 July 1975 Life peer as Baron Kirkhill, of Kirkhill in the District of the City of Aberdeen. Its official launch took place on 23 July 1975 with the support of William Hughes, Baron Hughes and James Hoy, Baron Hoy.

On August 7, 1975 he gave his inaugural speech in the House of Lords. In the 1970s, he spoke in parliamentary debates among other things, traffic accidents, the retirement scheme of Scottish teachers, Scottish prisons and the Scotland Bill. When he had reported himself up to and including 1978 several times a year to speak, he did so again until 1983. During the 1980s, he reported, inter alia, energy costs, the industry, privatization, and the explosion of Piper Alpha to speak. In the 1990s, he spoke to the pollution of the North Sea, the human rights situation in Turkey, the National Health Service, the overcrowding of prisons and the European defense policy. Smith said in the 2000s, among other topics to the asylum, Agriculture in the United Kingdom and the Scotland Act 1998.

In the period April to June 2010 he received expense allowances worth £ 12,858.

Smith married in 1965 Frances Mary Walker Reid.
