John States Seybold

John States Seybold ( born July 2, 1897 in Topeka, Kansas; † 28 February 1984) was an American officer. Between 1952 and 1956 he was Governor of the Panama Canal Zone.

Career

Between 1916 and 1920 John Seybold graduated the United States Military Academy at West Point. He then began a long career as an officer in the United States Army. Upon leaving the military service he had reached the rank of major general. Seybold was initially for a short time at the coast artillery, but moved in 1920 to the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1922 he studied as an officer and civilian civil engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Between 1922 and 1925 he was first stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. From 1928 to 1933 he taught at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas military science and tactics. Then he became commander of Engineers District of Vicksburg in Mississippi, which was responsible for the control of the lower reaches of the Mississippi River.

During the Second World War Seybold was made ​​head of the procuring entity of the Corps of Engineers and then from 1943 procurement officer in North Africa and later in Europe. He was responsible for the replenishment of the Corps. After the war he took a few command posts in various American states. 1952 Seybold was appointed as the successor of Francis K. Newcomer to the new Governor of the Panama Canal Zone. This post he held until 1956; then he withdrew into retirement. He died on 28 February 1984.
