John Tarleton (Royal Navy officer)

John Walter Tarleton, KCB (* November 8, 1811; † September 25, 1880 ) was a British admiral.

Life

John Walter Tarleton joined the Royal Navy in March 1824. In 1835 he was promoted to lieutenant, in 1846 and 1852 to the Captain Commander. He participated in the Second Anglo - Burmese War in part. In the 1850s, he commanded the HMS Eurydice and the HMS Euryalus. In 1868 he was promoted to Rear Admiral. From June 1871 to May 1872 he was Junior Naval Lord and from May 1872 to December 1874 he was Second Naval Lord. On 24 May 1873 he was admitted as a Knight Commander in the Order of the Bath. In the same year he was promoted to Vice Admiral. In 1879, he went into retirement.

He married 1861. The marriage produced three children, one son and two daughters. John Walter Tarleton was a great-grandson of the merchant, ship owner and Mayor John Tarleton, and a grandson of his son Thomas. He is among other things a grandnephew of Banastre Tarleton.
