John Watling

John (or George ) Watling (born 17 century, † 1681 in Arica in Chile ) was an English pirate in the 17th century.

Life

It was said of him that he never sacked on Sunday and even his team forbade to play on Sundays cards. John Watling used as a base for an island in the Bahamas, which he gave his name Watling Iceland. This name lasted until 1925, the island was renamed San Salvador, because the island suspected in her, had landed on the Columbus after his first voyage. The captain was under his command, leaving behind a crew member on the upstream Chile Juan Fernandez Islands, an Indian of the Mosquito Coast, which had simply forgotten, inspired among others Defoe to write his novel Robinson. As Watling 1681, the Chilean city of Arica attack, he met his death.
