John White Abbott

John White Abbott ( born May 13, 1763 in Exeter, † 1851 in Exeter ) was an English landscape painter.

Life and work

John White Abbott was born in 1763 in Exeter, where he spent most of his life. He came from a wealthy family. By his uncle, he learned various artists know, including Joshua Reynolds and Francis Towne, where he took painting lessons. John White Abbott but not chose painting as a profession, but also opened a medical practice, which he led until his death in Exeter.

John White Abbott painted mainly landscapes of his closer Devon. He was represented at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts regularly 1793-1805, and 1810 and 1822. For this exhibition he painted oil paintings in conventional classical style in pastoral or elegiac mood. Far more numerous and of higher quality, however, are his watercolors and drawings.
