John Wilbye

John Wilbye (* March 7, 1574 in Diss, Norfolk, † September or October 1638 in Colchester, Essex ) was an English composer in the transition from Renaissance to Baroque.

Life

Wilbye was since 1598 musicians in the house of Count Thomes Kytson and his family at Castle Hengrave Hall in Suffolk. Here he lived and worked until 1628, after which he moved to Colchester, where he also served a daughter of Count Kytson until his death as a house musician.

Wilbye is regarded as one of the outstanding composers of his time in England. Among his most famous madrigals include Draw On, Sweet Night, Sweet Honey Sucking Bees, Weep, Weep, Mine Eyes and Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis. Many of his works have remained popular long after his death and were listed again and again.
