John William, Baron Ripperda

Juan Guillermo Riperdá, Baron, later Duke of Riperdá ( born March 7, 1680/82 in Oldehove, Groningen, The Netherlands, † November 5, 1737 in Tetouan, Morocco), actually Johan Willem baron Ripperda, Lord of Englumborg and Jensema was a political adventurer and Spanish Prime Minister during the reign of Philip V of Spain.

Ripperda was fast and in 1715 sent in the Dutch service colonel to enter into a commercial contract to Spain, where he was assigned as a result of his acquaintance with the commercial and industrial nature of the government with the implementation of industrial reforms. After he had converted to the Catholic Church, he knew how to win the favor of Philip V and Queen Elizabeth, and was sent in 1725 in an important mission to Vienna, where he brought the Treaty of Vienna concluded, providing for the marriage of the Spanish Infante Charles with Maria Theresia. On his return, he was raised to the Duke of Ripperda and ministers. As, however, turned out the result of his Viennese activity as apparent success, he lost his position in 1726; he was accused of treason, imprisoned at the Alcázar of Segovia, where he succeeded only after two years, to flee to Portugal to England.

In 1730 he went back to Holland and took the reformed faith again, but a year later he appeared at the court of Muley Abdallah of Morocco as his friend and adviser, and as orthodox Muslim on. As commander of the army against Spain, whose deployment he had advised, he was defeated in 1733 in Ceuta (Gibraltar ) which gives pulled the favor of the sultan.
